St Thomas’s Church is fully accessible from Corseley Road, and additionally on Sundays from the school playing field (which provides parking space). The church is central to the village, a focal point in the community.
It is situated next to the village school and is the oldest building in Groombridge.
St Thomas’s is a 19th century Grade II listed building serving the local community. The core of the building is the original design by Norman Shaw. Significant changes were made in the late 20th century with the building of a narthex (social space) at the west end, with a balcony above. This area also houses the kitchen and toilet facilities, all of which are fully accessible.
The church, including the nave, the narthex, the porch and the vestries are all on a single level, whilst there is only stepped access to the balcony and to the sanctuary at the east end.
Summary: whilst St Thomas’s is not fully accessible, all the principal areas are fully accessible. Full access to either the sanctuary or the gallery without major impact on the building that would not be compatible with its Grade II listing.
